Based on the Minnesota Case Mix tool, it evaluates a veteran’s needs across daily activities, behavior, cognition, and medical conditions. It’s not a diagnostic tool or a guarantee of services — it’s a structured, evidence-based guide to inform care planning and categorize veterans into care levels with suggested weekly hour ranges. Importantly, it’s designed to assess how much support a veteran truly needs, not just whether they can technically complete a task.
Ultimately, VA case managers and social workers make the final decision on approved hours. If you believe a veteran needs more support than the tool suggests, you can absolutely advocate for that, just be thoughtful. The tool helps justify increased hours when medically necessary, but only when it’s backed by accurate, well-documented information. Use it to reflect the veteran’s real-world challenges, not just to check boxes.
